    Summary

    In the changing healthcare system in which we now all live and work, it is timely that we focus on providing quality imaging services for primary care. This document has been developed collaboratively between The Royal College of Radiologists (RCR), the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) and the Society and College of Radiographers (SCoR) as a good practice guide to developing collaborative practices between diagnostic imaging departments and primary care providers for the benefit of patients, and to support GPs in delivering excellent, timely care.

    This guidance and advice is published jointly by the Society and College of Radiographers, Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine and Royal College of Radiologists to provide support and information with respect to the practical issues which need to be considered in developing a new radiotherapy service, including service models.     Summary: The aim of this statement is to confirm the current scope of practice for the professional workforce for diagnostic imaging and radiotherapy. The term 'professional workforce' includes the following practitioners: diagnostic radiographers, therapeutic radiographers, sonographers, nuclear medicine technologists, dosimetrists and others working at autonomous practitioner level. In this way, this scope of practice statement is relevant for all those health care professionals working within diagnostic imaging and radiotherapy with the exception of the support workforce, including assistant practitioners, for whom other statements have been published.

    The Society and College of Radiographers (SCoR) is aware that sonographers working for some NHS Trusts, Health Boards or other Imaging Service Providers are coming under increasing pressure to reduce the time allowed for ultrasound examination appointments. In addition, there have also been instances where extra appointments have been added prospectively to a booked list as a way of compensating for patients who do not attend (DNA).

    SCoR publishes the findings of a project which was undertaken for the SCoR by University of Hertfordshire and the Institute for Employment Studies in August 2012 to develop draft modules and a credit framework to support development of management skills in radiographers. SCoR commends the outcomes as guidance for individuals looking to develop themselves in this direction, and to education providers who are seeking to either develop programmes for aspirant and actual managers in the profession, or ensure their current management development programmes cater effectively for the radiography profession.
