Society members have voted overwhelmingly to support the nationwide Day of Action due to be taken by public sector unions on 30 November in opposition to government plans to reform pensions.

The ballot of the 17,500 radiographers who work in the National Health Service was held by the Electoral Reform Society.

The ERS reported that 58.2 per cent of eligible Society members voted and that industrial action was supported by 8504 votes to 1648 votes.

“It is sad that we have to take industrial action to persuade the government that the pension reforms are unfair, but members feel they have no choice,” said Sue Johnson, president of the Society of Radiographers.

“We and the other unions will keep negotiating right up until the last minute to stop the savage cuts to pension rights,” she continued.

“If we have to go ahead with industrial action, it is our intention to minimise the effect it will have on patients. Our argument is not with them but with the government and withdrawing labour is one way we can show the depth of our anger at what the government is doing to people’s pensions.”
