NHS Evidence, a service provided by NICE, will be producing new style Evidence Updates to assist health and social care professionals in keeping up-to-date with new research, as well as supporting them to make evidence-based decisions in a focused and time-efficient manner.

The intention of these Evidence Updates is not to replace current accredited guidance, but to highlight new evidence that might generate a future change in practice.

For the latest Evidence Update, Venous thromboembolism: reducing the risk, more than 2000 pieces of evidence were searched through, of which 25 were chosen for publication.

An Evidence Update Advisory Group, made up of subject experts, reviewed the prioritised evidence and provided a commentary.

Dr Mike Durkin, National Clinical Director for Venous Thrombo-Embolism, said: “This Evidence Update from NICE will help improve our clinical understanding of the most appropriate and effective interventions so that we can continue to save lives and reduce long-term disability from venous thromboembolism.”

By producing Evidence Updates, NHS Evidence is looking to reduce the need for individuals, managers and commissioners to search for new evidence and to inform guidance developers of new evidence in their field.

Feedback on Evidence Updates would be welcomed, please email contactus@evidence.nhs.uk with any comments.
