Final year diagnostic and therapeutic student radiographers at Glasgow Caledonian University gave up a day’s study, with their lecturers, to bring much enthusiasm and spirit to World Radiography Day 2011.

They set up stalls of home baking, quizzes, displays of x-ray images, radiotherapy treatment kit and even beat the time to perform the game Operation - all for a small donation.

The students also encouraged people to the Year of Radiotherapy stand where leaflets on cancer information were available to be taken away, along with the Society of Radiographers’ owls and the rare collector’s item of parrots.

They raised £397.42 which has been donated to the Prince and Princess of Wales Hospice in Glasgow. The event ran all through the day in the foyer of the Govan Mbeki building at the university where they were able to capture passing trade as fellow students moved between classes. Many university staff members came along to show support and chat to the radiography students.

This was an incredible effort put in by fourth year students who are also preparing for dissertations at this time.

Both Yvonne Oliver, lecturer in diagnostic imaging, and Margaret Spalding, lecturer in radiotherapy, agreed, “how proud we are of our students – all the ideas were completely their own and we were overwhelmed by their hard work and enthusiasm that helped both interest and engage the staff and students of GCU”.
