GIRSIG
The organisation was formed in 1997 to provide a focal point for radiographers and other health professionals involved in GI work. The aim of the group is to provide support and encouragement and to promote the development of high professional standards of safe practice. The focus of the group is on radiographer/practitioner managed gastrointestinal (GI) and other fluoroscopic/endoscopic examinations.
Membership (via a small annual fee) is open to any healthcare professional involved with GI or fluoroscopic examinations (ie nurses, radiographic assistants, speech therapists, radiologists etc).
Initially started as a federation of small local groups feeding to a national committee, the remit of the group has become more strategic acting as advocate for members in expanding their roles, organising study days and conferences (with subsidies and preferential rates for members), a printed publication - the GIRSIG Gazette with articles written by members, for members - is sent to all members twice a year and a dedicated website has been developed at www.girsig.org.uk.
Membership of the GIRSIG national committee is open to any member who wishes to join after discussion with current members. National meetings are usually held at the Society of Radiographers' Headquarters in London, twice each year.
Over the last few years, the national committee members have represented our views on a number of committees investigating the new roles of advanced and consultant practitioners and, by doing so, have helped to push GI radiography into the mainstream of these discussions.
An annual educational bursary is offered in memory of one of our founder members, Pat Conlon; more details are available from the website.
