National voluntary register for sonographers

A patient being scanned. The Society is encouraging all sonographers, involved with ultrasound in the fields of clinical practice, education, research, management and applications, to sign up to a new voluntary register.

"Currently there is no independent regulatory body for health care practitioners using ultrasound," explains Andy Pitt, President of the SoR. "But there is a growing demand from sonographers to be regulated, for the protection of the public and to uphold education, training and experience in this field.

"In order to protect the title of sonographer and to be recognised as a profession by a regulatory body, a single register of suitably trained and experienced health care ultrasound practitioners needs to be established."

A joint working party between the SCoR and the United Kingdom Association of Sonographers (UKAS) will pursue the application of sonographers to be regulated by the Health Professions Council. It is anticipated those registered on the voluntary will be eligible to be transferred to the statutory register when it is available.

Entry onto the voluntary register is free to current members of UKAS and the SoR. The fee for non members is £75.
