Conformal radiotherapy

The beams of radiation directed at the patient are shaped (conformed) to match the shape of area that needs to be treated. This allows sparing of normal tissues and higher doses to be given to improve chances of cure / control. Beams are shaped using shielding devices either internal (multi-leaf collimators) or external (shielding blocks) to the treatment machine.
