Intensity modulated radiotherapy

The beams of radiation are formed around the area that needs to be treated by varying (modulating) their strength (intensity) to achieve the desired dose and coverage. This form of treatment is different in that it tends to be given in one sequence (not a number of fields), with field size, shape and angle varying throughout the sequence. This type of treatment needs specialised treatment planning and delivery systems.
