Return to Radiography - Managers
Returners have a lot to offer! Many departments have had experience of taking on returners and most report a happy and successful outcome. Over the years hundreds of radiographers have left the profession and some can be encouraged back with your help. Returning radiographers very often bring other skills and qualities to the department. Many have gained experience in a different working environment either in paid employment or as a volunteer or may have had a career break, perhaps for children, and would return with the skills gained through having children. Returning radiographers tend to have a maturity which would be valuable in the workforce and once back in employment tend to stay and be a valuable and flexible member of staff.
The challenge is, of course, bringing the returner up to date and competent to practice. They need to meet the standards required by the Health Professions Council (HPC) to gain registration as a radiographer. From July 2006 The HPC has a requirement for a 30 day or 60 day period of updating skills and knowledge. Managers are advised to check for the latest information on the HPC website www.hpc-uk.org.
The issue of what to pay the returner during a period of supervised practice is problematic. Many departments report that they have utilised the helper/assistant pay grades and then transferred them to radiographer grading once registration with HPC is achieved. Strategic Health Authorities (or equivalent) should provide support and managers are advised to contact their Return to Practice Co-ordinator to ask what is available in their area.
Radiotherapy managers will wish to talk to Margaret Le Beau who manages a national Return to Practice project. Please contact Margaret Le Beau on M.Lebeau@shu.ac.uk
