UKRC: First impressions count

A student reading a book.

Sophia and fellow Salford second year Jane Brooks sign up as SoR members with Samantha Jewell (left), SoR student officer.

Sophia Rabin, second year diagnostic student from Salford University, shares her experiences at UKRC 2008 with Eleanor Sheath:

What did you find most useful about coming to UKRC?
I found the wide variety of lectures really interesting, clear and helpful. I was also able to ask questions to the exhibitors who were only too happy to help. Leaflets where available on most stands so if I wanted to read up on a subject area further I could do so.

How will attending help you with your studies?
UKRC has allowed me to experience and learn more about the different aspects of radiology such as ultrasound, MRI, CT and angiography. UKRC has also allowed me to meet people from other disciplines and view my role both as an individual and within a team. I believe the lectures I attended will relate to modules that I am scheduled to study in my final year of radiography. I will hopefully be able to apply what I learnt at the conference to future assignments and during clinical placement.

Do you think it will help you when you begin job seeking?
Yes, it is an excellent way of communicating with other professionals and will show an employer that I have additional radiological experience to that inside of the department. It also shows my commitment to the radiography profession and my enthusiasm to continue to learn and develop as a radiographer.

Your joined the SoR while you were at UKRC, why and had you heard of them before UKRC?
Yes I had heard of the society at university, and often used the website before becoming a member. However, now that I am a member of the SoR I have access to several services such as; the members section of the website, the radiography journal (which is peer reviewed), Synergy and Synergy Nnews which informs me of matters that affect the radiography profession, conferences organised by the Society and much more. After talking to staff members of the SoR at UKRC I now understand how to utilise my membership so that I can improve my education and clinical experience.

What was the most interesting thing you found out while you were here?
I enjoyed the whole conference but the lectures were very informative. Talking to people from the different exhibitions also helped a great deal, including the society as I was made aware of additional activities and conferences. I was also advised about the support and services avaiable tha I never knew existed previously. I would definitely recommend a visit to UKRC and it will look great on your CV.
