HPC fees consultation

Line of studentsStudents are being encouraged to take part in the HPC’s consultation on registration fees.

Under the proposed increases the annual student registration fee is set to rise alongside other fees. However, there are two different proposals for how this increase could be structured:

• Option 1 - students who have sucessfully completed an HPC approved course pay £100 scrutiny fee and then £70 for the first two years’ annual registration;

• Option 2 - student fees are subsidised so they pay £30 scrutiny fee and then £36 registration fee for the first two years.

Elizabeth Ellis, senior radiographer at Portsmouth Hospital, is the new radiography representative on the HPC. She explained: “Personally I think option 2 is the best for students. The subsidy only means an extra £2 for other registrants but it would make a huge difference to a student.

“It is only a few years since I was a student myself so I realise how much it costs to train and the debts that people face. I have tried to speak up as much as I can for students to keep the fees increase to a minimum, but I would encourage anyone with a view to take part in the consultation. The HPC won’t know what you think unless you tell them. “

The consultation will run until Tuesday 6 February 2007. If the proposals are adopted the changes to the fees will be effective from June 2007.
