Rent to be a deductible expense for all students from September 2007
Student radiographers will be able to claim rent payments as a deductible expense from September 2007.
This is just one of the changes agreed by the DH and healthcare unions to update and modernise the current NHS Bursary Scheme.
Others include formalised maternity support and the introduction of a new parents learning allowance.
Gail Adams of Unison said: "The updated bursary is more attractive to students coming into the NHS. However, this is just a first step and we will be monitoring the impact of the new scheme and making sure that it delivers in the future."
"We are delighted that the DH has implemented the interim maternity provisions in full. Only a small number become pregnant while they are training, but the decision will give students much needed financial support and help them to return to their studies."
"Students with children also face many difficulties when studying, not least concerns over money. The decision to open up the single parents allowance to all students with children by creating the Parent Learning Allowance will go some way to supporting them through their studies."
