Bursary uplift should be higher, says SoR

A female studentThe SoR’s student officer, Mary Embleton, has welcomed the latest increase to the NHS Student Bursary but commented that it “should have been higher and in line with increases to the cost of living,”

The Department of Health (DH) has agreed a 2.33% uplift to the Bursary rates for both new and existing healthcare students, applicable from 1 September 2007.

Following previous announcements regarding changes to the scheme, the DH is reminding students that, whilst bursary rates have been uplifted and will be applied to all students, the scheme changes announced previously, including the introduction of a Parents’ Learning Allowance and removal of certain age-related allowances, will apply to new students only.

Under the legislation ‘new’ students are those who started courses from 1 September 2007 onwards, while ‘existing’ students are those that began courses on or before 31 August 2007.

Further information is available at the NHS student grants website.
