New consent guidelines in Wales

The Welsh Assembly Government's department for health and social services has issued revised guidelines on patient consent to examination and treatment.

Local health boards and NHS trusts are being asked to review their consent policies to ensure they are consistent with the new guidance.

The last set of consent guidelines were issued in April 2002. Significant developments since then have led to the guidance being revised. These include the coming into force of the Mental Capacity Act 2005 and the Human Tissue Act 2004.
