    Members of the Society of Radiographers have voted to establish a Political Fund, which will allow the trades union to continue to campaign on the issues which are important to members and patients.

    The ballot was sparked by changes to legislation which meant that trades unions will be unable to campaign and speak out about issues during election campaigns unless they have a ‘pot of money’ separate from the organisation’s general funds.

    Current model is not working, TUC Congress will be told

    It takes too long for patients to receive effective access to the treatment that they need because the government is obsessed with supporting an out-of-date system, next week’s trades union congress will be told.

    The Society of Radiographers say that patients should be able to go direct to the most appropriate healthcare professionals and not always have to rely on general practitioners to refer patients.

    The announcement in the most recent budget that the government intends to stop all student grants from next year will make it more difficult for people to become healthcare professionals including nurses and midwives.

    The TUC Congress in Brighton will be told by the Society of Radiographers that it will become even more difficult to attract people to professions that already suffer from significant shortages of qualified individuals.

    The professional body and trade union which represents the health professionals who provide diagnostic imaging and radiotherapy services say they agree with the findings of the Independent Cancer Taskforce, but are pessimistic that many of the changes can be delivered unless substantial investment is made in staffing and equipment.

    The four-hour strike by members of the Society of Radiographers (SoR) in Northern Ireland will go ahead tomorrow (30 April) and, other than individuals providing emergency and urgent care, the union are  expecting it to receive total support.

    Staff in Radiology Departments and at the Northern Ireland Cancer Centre will take to the picket lines from 8am until 12 noon.

    The trade union that represents diagnostic imaging and cancer treatment specialists in the NHS is to ask members if they want to set-up a political fund. If members vote ‘yes’, it will be the first time that the Society of Radiographers, established almost a hundred years, will have set up a fund specifically to finance political activity.
