About the Gold Medal award

The gold medal awards are the highest honour the Society can bestow upon a member of radiography profession.

They are awarded every ten years to individuals who have made exceptional contributions to radiography, developed the profession and advanced the Society and College of Radiographers. 

Fewer than 20 gold medals have been awarded.

Eligibility for nomination

  • Nominees can be UK or overseas nationals
  • Their field of work can span all the imaging and therapeutic radiotherapy modalities and the wider spheres of education, commerce, industry and management
  • Their nomination can be based on past and / or recent achievements
  • All nominations must be supported by a group of 10 current Society of Radiographers members
  • Nominees do not have to be current members of the Society
  • Nominees may be from outside the radiography profession

Nomination process

Nominations should be submitted via our online nomination form and will be considered by the SoR Awards Committee. A nomination must be supported by a description of the nominee’s outstanding contribution as recognised and acclaimed by his or her peers and must demonstrate an exceptional level of achievement, excellence and/or innovation in at least three of the following fields:

  • Support for the interests of the Society of Radiographers; for example exceptional contribution in representation, advocacy and promotion of staff relations, and the development of partnership working within an employing organisation, regionally or nationally
  • Evidence of positive impact on patient care, and promotion of the patient voice
  • Promotion and/or facilitation of the knowledge base of the profession, to include publications and presentations which build on the professional body of knowledge
  • Professional development in the practice of radiography, to include facilitation and implementation of the latest advances in radiographic techniques nationally
  • Fostered links with external bodies, ie industry and commerce, which have aided in the development of new techniques and modalities
  • Leadership of the profession and multidisciplinary workforce, to include the implementation of innovative professional practice and new ways of working
  • Research and development, which have resulted in a significant and beneficial change in practice
  • Educational developments, which are innovative and have an impact on wider healthcare training
  • Advocacy and ambassadorial roles within and outside the profession at national and/or international level
  • Exceptional service, including to the military and/or forensic science during time of conflict or major incident
