About the role

Senior clinical support workers require factual, procedural and theoretical knowledge and understanding of their occupational area to complete tasks and address problems that, while well defined, may be complex and non-routine. They interpret and evaluate relevant information and ideas, being aware of the nature of their area of work and of different perspectives or approaches.

Knowledge, skills, competencies and qualifications

Senior Clinical Support Workers identify, select, and use practical skills, methods & procedures to inform actions when completing tasks; while also reviewing how effective their methods and actions have been overall.

Staff at this level should have the specific learning that supports their role in diagnostic radiography.

Such as:

  • Radiation safety and magnetic field safety
  • Knowledge of diagnostic imaging examinations
  • Patient care: preparation and aftercare,
  • Equipment for sterile procedures
  • Including trolley setting, and QA/QC checks for imaging equipment and accessories. 
  • Those in this role should be appropriately supervised.

Key responsibilities

  • Maintain and support a clean and safe environment in an imaging department
  • Manage data relevant to the clinical imaging environment and patient episode
  • Communicate appropriately with patients, the multidisciplinary team and wider networks
  • Provide care for patients in the clinical imaging department
  • Assist with patient flow
  • Support specific examinations
  • Support the management of medicines
  • Education and training of others

What are Technical Levels (T-Levels)?

  • T Levels are new 2-year courses which are taken after GCSEs and are equivalent to 3 A Levels.
  • T Levels are courses that have been developed in collaboration with employees and academics of the workforce ensuring the content prepares students for entry into employment, an apprenticeship, further/higher education.

T Levels offer students practical and knowledge-based learning at a school or college and on-the-job experience through an industry placement of at least 315 hours – approximately 45 days.

The courses are available at selected colleges, schools and other providers across England.
