UWE student awarded Impact and Innovation Scholarship

A second year therapeutic radiography student at UWE Bristol - Shannon Johnson - has been awarded an Impact and Innovation Scholarship to develop her idea around engaging the public to raise awareness of radiotherapy.

“I feel extremely privileged to have been chosen to represent radiotherapy in the public eye at UWE," said Shannon.

"I am really excited and passionate about what lies ahead in the coming weeks and months, and feel that the amazing support from staff and my peers will help drive me to increase the awareness of therapeutic radiography as a treatment and as a rewarding career.” 

The scholarships, delivered by the UWE enterprise team provide a funding opportunity of £1000 combined with an eight week programme of support aimed at any student with an innovative idea around public engagement.

Shannon secured one of the two scholarships awarded to allied health students at UWE and will have access to a co-working space, be assigned a mentor and receive one-to-one support to help develop her idea.

Programme leads Mandy Tuckey and Claire Bennett said, “We are delighted that Shannon was awarded an Impact an Innovation scholarship to explore innovative ways to promote the profession and raise awareness of therapeutic radiography.

"We look forward to working with her on this exciting project and helping her achieve her outcomes.”

Angie Bambery, UWE Therapeutic Radiography lecturer and AHP enterprise and innovation lead added, “It is exciting to see Shannon’s enthusiasm for her idea and I look forward to watching how her idea develops over the scholarship period and beyond.

"Developing awareness of the therapeutic radiography profession, given it’s efficacy and cost effectiveness as a cancer treatment as well as promoting a career in therapeutic radiography is as important as ever given the changing landscapes within the NHS and therapeutic radiography education.”
