Standing up to student bullying at ADC 2013

"Since ADC 2012 the focus on bullying has lost its impetus and drive," Jane Harvey-Lloyd, Senior Lecturer in Diagnostic Radiography at University Campus Suffolk, told delegates at the SCoR's Annual Delegates Conference on Monday 22 April. 

"Evidence suggests that the bullying of students in healthcare professions is an on-going if not increasing problem. Other professions have, in the past year researched and published widely on this subject. Bullying is never acceptable."

Rachel Bailey, second-year student at St George's University of London and the newly-elected Observer to Council, seconded the motion, stating: "I am often informed that this [problem] is being addressed. However, experiencing other students who are my friends experiencing stress and not wanting to go into placement due to certain members of staff is not how it should be."

"Bullying is a constant problem mentioned by students on the radiography course. I understand that training for a degree in radiography is not going to be easy as we are training to become professionals. However, intimidating students is only likely to make them less able to enhance and develop their skills."

Adele Stewart-Lord, Course Director at London Southbank University, added: "According to published studies nearly all of you in this room have seen some form of harassment of bullying in the workplace. Now how many of you can honestly say today that you did something about it?"

The motion calling on Council to publicise the anti-bullying strategy more strongly was carried. This means the Society will report back on this issue in the near future.
