OPPORTUNITY FOR EXTERNALLY APPOINTED TRUSTEE with EDUCATION SPECIALISM

    About the College of Radiographers

The College of Radiographers (CoR) is a UK registered charity and subsidiary of the Society of Radiographers, the trade union and professional body for the radiographic workforce and associated professionals in the UK.  The CoR is concerned with the promotion and development of medical imaging and radiotherapy, the promotion of study and research into radiography, and the promotion of public awareness of the profession. The Society and College of Radiographers are two separate companies operating together to provide service and support for those involved in radiography, including as patients, service users and the public.

    Skills and Experience

The College of Radiographers’ Board of Trustees has a vacancy for a Trustee who is keen to share their expertise and experience with the board.  Specifically, we are keen to fill this vacancy with someone working at a senior level in Radiography Education, to bring their wider understanding of Higher Education to our Board team.  The individual would contribute their experience to reviewing high level guidance documents and policy, helping provide the Board with assurance that all aspects of the subject matter have been properly considered.

The specialist Education Trustee would also undertake committee work, being a trustee representative to the Approvals and Accreditation Board (AAB) . The role of the AAB is to oversee and recommendations to the College board in relation to both approval of pre- and post-registration programmes and  the accreditation of individuals, such as Assistant Practitioners, Practice Educators, Advanced Practitioners and Consultant Practitioners.

The candidate should ideally have experience of the College of Radiographers programme approval process, (although this is not an essential), should also demonstrate a strong commitment to the robust governance of a charity, bringing their own perspective and expertise to contribute to exciting changes and developments in the field of radiography. Although we welcome previous board experience, we are also open to applications from first time Trustees. We hope our appointee will help us to gain unique and objective insights by providing an external perspective that can contribute to the College of Radiographers’ strategic work and vision, helping steer delivery of the College of Radiographers Strategy 2021-24.

    Why Volunteer as a Trustee?

Being a charitable Trustee of the College of Radiographers is worthwhile, rewarding and stimulating. It provides opportunities to:

    • Develop your skills and experience in the context of charity governance.
    • Participate in two training days a year with external experts, including one shared with the Society of Radiographers board.
    • Receive paid standard class travel to London and overnight hotel stays when required (if not already based in London) for board meetings and other events.
    • Enhance your professional networks.
    • Work as a member of a close-knit team each bringing their own area of expertise and experience
    • Contribute to the advancement of a cause and profession making huge advances in improving patient care.

    Time Commitment

The term of office is five years, with the option to stand for a second, five-year term. There are four daytime board meetings each year, as well as two training days. Meeting dates are set with inclusivity in mind, so as to not clash with major religious and cultural festivals, or with UK-wide public and school holidays. There is also an expectation that Trustees will represent the College on other committees and task groups, as well as at events representing the Board, such as Radiographer of the Year and the Presidential Inauguration.  New Trustees will receive induction training after joining the Board.

    Diversity, Equality, Inclusion

We know diversity fosters creativity and innovation. We are committed to promoting equality, diversity and inclusion among our workforce and Boards and we aim to ensure the College Board of Trustees becomes representative of all sections of society. We would welcome applications from diverse individuals and communities, and particularly encourage those from an ethnically diverse background. A diverse board brings a variety of perspectives, experiences and skills to the table, which in turn helps boards make better decisions, as well as building trust and confidence with our members and wider stakeholders.

    Meeting Arrangements

This is an unpaid voluntary position, although out-of-pocket expenses are paid for agreed travel, accommodation and subsistence associated with the role, when this is required. Board Meetings are often hybrid, held face to face at the Society’s head office at 207 Providence Square, Mill Street, London SE1 2EW, with a remote access option. Some meetings are only held remotely.  Lunch is provided for all London-based meetings. The building is fully accessible, and remote access to meetings via videoconference  available on most occasions.

Please note that individuals are automatically disqualified as Charity Trustees if they:

    • Have unspent convictions for offences of dishonesty or deception.
    • Are currently declared bankrupt or subject to bankruptcy restrictions or an interim order.
    • Are subject to a debt relief order, a debt relief restrictions order or interim order
    • Have been disqualified from being a company director.
    • Have previously been removed as a Trustee, or as a charity officer, agent, or employee, by the Commission or the High Court due to misconduct or mismanagement.

As part of the appointment process, the appointee will need to sign a Consent to Act undertaking, in which the appointee confirms that none of the above apply. They will also need to declare interests that may impact on their role. If there are any interests that may present a significant conflict in terms of carrying out the role, then potential candidates are advised to speak too us prior to application.

    Applications

Applications are invited by CV and a brief personal statement and covering letter and should be sent to [email protected] before the closing date on 11 April 2023 at 23:59hrs. The personal statement should address requirements set out above and also as set out within the accompanying documentation pack. Any queries can also be sent to this email address. An opportunity to speak informally to the Chair about the role can be arranged.
