A consultant Therapeutic Radiographer has become the first to win Professional of the Year at the Asian Achievers Awards.
Maulik Darji has been a radiographer since July 2014 and in 2022 became the youngest consultant Therapeutic Radiographer in his field.
The awards recognised his achievements in “breaking new ground as a pioneering British Asian leader”.
With more than 500 nominations from across the UK in Professional of the Year alone, the awards were celebrated at a prestigious ceremony hosted by actor Nitin Ganatra and Sky News presenter Anila Dhami.
In a statement, prime minister Keir Starmer said: “British Asians are a driving force behind much of the social, cultural and economic innovation we see in Britain today. This is why it is wonderful to see so many British Asian changemakers being recognised tonight by the team at EPG, honouring the contribution they in particular have made to public life, community service, arts, culture, business, technology and beyond.”
Launched in 2002, the Asian Achievers Awards celebrate excellence and leadership across a range of sectors in the UK – including medicine, business, public service and the arts.
The awards as a whole attract thousands of nominations and shine a spotlight on individuals who are shaping and inspiring society.
Maulik was also the first independent prescriber of medicines in his department, and has continued to champion support for head and neck cancer patients beyond his work within the NHS – including as a medical advisor, patron, and as president of the SWALLOWS Head and Neck Cancer Support charity.
Maulik said: “I am truly honoured and deeply humbled to have received this award thank you the Asian Achievers Awards and the judges. This recognition means so much - not just to me. This award celebrates more than my hard work. It honours every patient who placed their trust in me, every mentor who guided me and every voice pushing for more inclusive compassionate care.
“This raises the profile of us Therapy Radiographers. To my family, Dr Vaidya my mentor, my incredible colleagues at Northampton General Hospital and The Swallows Charity - thank you. This recognition is for all of us. Above all, I thank God for blessing me with the opportunity to make a difference. Lets continue to lead with purpose - one life, one act of kindness, one bold step at a time."
