The SoR is encouraging members to join in with Greener AHP Week 2026, a chance to emphasise sustainable practice in the AHP space.

Now in its fourth year, Greener AHP Week 2026 will take place from Monday 20 April to Friday 24 April. The week sees webinars and educational materials delivered to Allied Health Professionals  (AHPs) across England in line with the AHPs Strategy for England 2022-2027.

The strategy states that action from AHPs is “crucial” in reaching the NHS’s goal of net zero emissions for the care it provides by 2040.

AHPs across England are encouraged to take advantage of the resources uploaded on the Greener AHP Forum - National AHP Virtual Hub - Futures. Registration is required to view this content.

“We all need to be responsible for making these changes”

Katie Thompson, president of the SoR, said that Greener AHP Week is a chance to prove how sustainability-conscious radiographers can be.

“Showcasing how we are working smarter to reduce our waste and make ethical choices to become more sustainable - and how to do this - underpins Greener AHP week,” she said. “We as radiographers are all too aware of the waste that is produced from contrast media, gloves, paper rolls, one-time use items, the list goes on.”

She added that there are many opportunities in radiographers’ working lives to reduce waste and benefit the environment, as well as cut costs for the NHS.

“There have been many intuitive trials performed showing how this can be significantly reduced, which can also have the benefit of financial savings, for example, shutting down unused workstations at night, only using gloves in the appropriate circumstances and looking to use contrasts that have reduced the amount of non-biodegradable elements within them.

“Sometimes small changes can have a big long-term impact. We all need to be responsible for making these changes.”
