Independent prescribing consultation extended until October end

Diagnostic Radiographers are being encouraged to submit their input on how proposed changes could affect their work

The Department of Health and Social Care’s consultation on extending independent prescribing responsibility to Diagnostic Radiographers has been extended until the end of October.

The consultation offers medical professionals, including radiographers, the chance to feed back on how these changes could affect their work.

The proposed changes are still pending approval from parliament and the Northern Ireland Assembly, making it “vital” everyone participates, according to SoR president Katie Thompson.

'Your opinions matter'

While regulated healthcare professionals have been responsible for prescribing, supplying and administering medicines for many years, these changes would also alter the medicines regulations relating to physiotherapists, paramedics and operating department practitioners.

They would also permit Diagnostic Radiographers to train as independent prescribers, and enable Diagnostic Radiographer practitioners working at an enhanced, advanced or consultant (EAC) level to train as independent prescribers of medicines.

Katie said: “We would appreciate your input; your feedback is crucial in shaping the future of our profession. Your insights can help ensure the final decisions reflect what is best for Diagnostic Radiographers and the patients we serve. We hope you will consider taking part – your opinions matter and this is your opportunity to make them heard.”

Independent prescription consultation

Any individual who lives or works in the UK, or organisation that operates or provides services in the UK, can submit input to the consultation.

The SoR is encouraging all UK-based members, whether radiographers, support workers, educators, associate professionals, trainees, students or in another role, to take a few minutes to complete the online survey before it closes at 11:59pm, 28 October 2025.

To understand more about the project, see the SoR’s summary and FAQ page. Questions about independent prescribing or the consultation process should be directed to Sue Johnson, professional officer for clinical imaging, via [email protected]
