The Society of Radiographers is inviting members to join online for the launch of the Support Worker Special Interest Group in December.

This Special Interest Group (SIG) is dedicated to uniting, empowering and celebrating support workers from across the society’s membership.

It is intended to provide a platform for support worker members to share their thoughts, discuss their experiences, and put forward ideas to help shape the future of the profession.

'A long time coming'

Sue Johnson, professional officer for clinical imaging at the SoR, said: “For me, this group has been a long time coming, and I think it really shows just how essential support workers are—and always have been—in our radiography workforce. For so many years, patients have experienced the care, skills, and dedication of support workers at every stage of their diagnostic or therapeutic radiography journey.

“I’m really proud that the Society of Radiographers is recognising their contribution and celebrating the role they play. With this group, we’re making sure their voices are heard more clearly than ever before. Support workers are such a significant part of how we deliver our services, and their contribution absolutely deserves even greater recognition and support.”

The first meeting will be an open conversation to explain the SIG’s function, asking members what they would like to see the group do and what topics they would like covered. It will also outline the process for nominating a chair/deputy chair and social media lead.

Creating a supportive environment

A spokesperson for the society said: "Together, we can build not just a support system, but a platform for growth, learning, and lasting connections.

“Whether you wish to connect with others, seek support, or help lead positive change, this is your space.”

Members can help shape the group’s aims by joining the upcoming virtual meeting, due to be held on Wednesday 17 December at 6.30pm.

Sophie White, radiology department assistant and an SoR rep, said: “In the current climate, it is more important than ever, for every health care worker to be able to have their say on the issues that impact us and the work that we and our colleagues do.

“It has also never been more important for us to support each other to achieve our goals. I am excited to be the founding chair of this SIG and to help create a supportive environment where members of the support staff can come together to build each other up and share skills and information.”

Unique contribution

The event will be an open conversation with regional and professional officers of the SoR, Rebecca Austion and Sue Johnson respectively, as well as Chris Kennedy, national officer, and Leandre Archer, head of industrial relations.

Participation by support workers will help to shape the group’s purpose, decide its focus areas, and ensure everyone can benefit from the kind of support it will offer.

A spokesperson for the society added: “Your journey in this supportive and inspiring community starts here! Thank you for your time, your commitment, and your unique contribution. We look forward to working with you in this exciting initiative.”
