Applications open for research and leadership mentoring schemes

Radiographers interested in developing their careers can apply to the Leadership Mentoring or Formal Radiography Research Mentoring Schemes

Applications are still open for the Leadership Mentoring Scheme and the Formal Radiography Research Mentoring Scheme, to help radiographers support their career development.

For members of the Society of Radiographers interested in strengthening their leadership capabilities or pursuing a future in research, the Leadership Mentoring Scheme (LMS) and the Formal Radiography Research Mentoring scheme (FoRRM) offer one-to-one support from experienced professionals.

Successful applicants will be granted exclusive access to training and networking events, helping to boost skills, confidence, and career prospects.

Formal Radiography Research Mentoring

The College of Radiographers’ FoRRM scheme offers those with Master’s-level postgraduate degrees mentoring from a top academic or clinical research radiographer.

Participants can enhance research skills and connect with other like-minded researchers at the SoR’s dedicated training and networking events, while receiving support from expert researchers.

Nmesoma Ukaji, MRI radiographer at Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, applied to the scheme last year.

She said: “I wasn't sure what to expect when I first applied for the scheme. I know I had interest in research but wasn't sure where to begin and how to build my research capacity whilst still clinical. I was lucky to be paired with a mentor who understood my needs and was able to guide and support me in addressing them.

“Through my mentor's support, I was able to gain skills in grant application writing as I submitted a CoRIPS grant application. I got ideas on opportunities available that I could access, review on applications, and made meaningful connections through mentorship. Just having someone to encourage and support your growth, willing to answer questions, point you in the right direction, or simply listen made all the difference.”

Leadership Mentoring Scheme

The LMS helps radiographers to develop the confidence and skills needed to pursue senior leadership and management roles, with applicants being paired with senior leaders and being granted access to exclusive training and networking events.

Emma Edwards, programme director for radiography at Keele University, explained she had returned from maternity leave just prior to applying to the LMS – when imposter syndrome was at an all time high. However, the LMS had helped to turn that around.

“Undertaking this mentorship scheme has given me more confidence in undertaking my job role and being an advocate for the profession,” she said. “It has opened up many doors for me through networking and has given me self confirmation and self belief in my role as an educator, professional and a leader.

“If anyone is wondering if this is a good option for you, I would recommend you apply. You meet lovely mentees and mentors along the way, and it has really benefited my understanding of leadership from seeing this from a wider perspective.”

Interested members must review the eligibility criteria, application guidance and ensure they are able to attend the mandatory events before applying. For more information on the LMS, click here. For more information on the FoRRM scheme, click here.

The deadline for applications to both schemes is 30 June.
