Details of Covid-19 temporary register released

How does it work?

The Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) has released details of how the Covid-19 temporary register will work. The aim is to bring back radiographers who have voluntarily left the profession in the past three years.

Also included will be final year radiography students who have completed all their clinical practice placements.

Registration is automatic and the HCPC says, "If your name is on this list, and you would like to offer to support your profession in the Covid-19 pandemic, you do not need to do anything further with HCPC in order to practice.

"It is for employers recruiting COVID-19 temporary registrants to decide what, if any, checks they will need to put in place to prove identity.

"We expect that for the majority of former registrants, this will be fairly informal, relying on professional networks, employer records or HCPC documentation (if still available).

"For students, we would expect employers to liaise with education providers to confirm identity. For the majority of cases this should be fairly informal, as most third year students will likely be working in settings where they have already been on placement and so there is already an existing relationship."

If former registrants do not want to return to practice, "There is no need to do anything further. The COVID-19 temporary Register simply provides for a list of eligible professionals who could go back into practice, if they choose to."

Individuals can ask for their name to be removed.

Registrants returning via the temporary register will not be required to pay registration fees but arrangements for professional indemnity insurance are being decided.

A questionnaire is being developed for radiographers who would like to return to temporary practice, so that "professionals can be deployed appropriately". It is scheduled to be published next week.
