Development of therapeutic and diagnostic radiographer apprenticeships approved

5 December, 2017

The Institute for Apprenticeships (IfA) has approved the development of two separate pre-registration apprenticeships for therapeutic radiographer and diagnostic radiographer.

"The two trailblazer groups, with input from the SCoR, have worked extremely hard to ensure that the IfA understands the two distinct professions and we’re very pleased at the outcome," Louise Coleman, the SCoR professional officer for education and accreditation, said.

"The trailblazer groups and the Society  are looking forward to continuing to work together to develop the two standards and assessments and to provide prospective therapeutic and diagnostic radiographers with an alternative route into the profession," Louise continued.

Charlotte Beardmore, the SCoR director of professional policy, said "It is extremely pleasing to see that the hard work of the collaborative trailblazer group over the past six months has resulted in the right outcome. Diagnostic and Therapeutic Radiography are separate and distinct professions.

"We will be pleased to contribute to the ongoing work in relation to the development of the apprenticeships standards for both and look forward to working with both trailblazer groups. Well done to both teams."

Maria Reynolds, practice and education lead at the Heart of England Trust is the chair for the diagnostic group and Baz (Hazel) Rodger, head of radiotherapy at Leeds Cancer Centre is the lead for therapeutic radiography.
