Attrition remains high for therapeutic radiography

AAB annual report

The number of students leaving pre-registration diagnostic radiography programmes is highlighted in the latest Approval and Accreditation Board’s (AAB) annual report.

Students failing to complete their studies rose to 14.86%, with 14 education providers having an attrition value of 10% or more.

Therapeutic radiography student attrition decreased by just over two per cent to 24.52%, compared to a four per cent increase the previous year. “However," the report notes, "not everyone provided data, so it is difficult to assume that this is a real decrease in attrition.”

Applications to both diagnostic and therapeutic radiography programmes fell, compared with 2017-18, and the number of students that left a diagnostic course for financial reasons doubled.

Five diagnostic and four therapeutic radiography providers did not have practice educators to support students while they are on placement.
