In light of the 16th April 2025 Supreme Court ruling, the Society of Radiographers (SoR) wishes to extend our unwavering support and solidarity to our trans members and service users. The court's decision, which defines 'woman', 'man' and 'sex' in terms of biological sex for the purposes of the Equality Act, has undoubtedly raised concerns within our professional community. We acknowledge that this decision may impact the confidence, safety, and experiences of trans professionals and students in clinical and academic settings.
We want to emphasise that this ruling does not diminish the protections afforded to trans individuals under the Equality Act 2010. The Act explicitly prohibits discrimination based on gender reassignment, ensuring that individuals are protected living as a gender other than that which they were assigned at birth, irrespective of having undergone any medical treatment or surgery.
The SoR is actively reviewing the implications of this ruling to our professional practices and policies and is seeking expert advice. We want to reassure our members that our commitment to serving you remains resolute and unchanged. We recognise that this ruling may have significant consequences, and we are dedicated to advocating for the rights and protections of all our members.
To our trans members, we stand with you. We understand that this ruling may feel like a setback in the fight for equality and recognition of your rights. Please know that SoR is here to support you and remains steadfast in its commitment to equality, dignity, inclusion and belonging for all. We will continue to champion your well-being and your right to live freely, safely and proudly.
Together, we will navigate these challenges and continue to strive for a more inclusive and equitable future for all.
