On Wednesday, the SoR will hold an online panel discussion and live Q&A to mark Black History Month.

Black History Month takes place in October each year in the UK. The webinar is named after this year’s Black History Month theme, which is ‘Standing Firm in Power and Pride’.

The session will take place on Wednesday 8 October from 15:00-16:30. It will be facilitated by Rubi Gubara-Sannie, founder and managing director of Turning Tables Consulting.

Topics of discussion will range from breaking barriers and leading systemic change to sponsorship beyond mentoring. Panellists will also delve into mythbusting the ideas of “readiness” and “fit” and implementing anti-racism in daily practice, as well as keeping this momentum alive.

Four panellists will be featured on the webinar:

  • Kirsty Verrier, administrative assistant (equality and training) at NASUWT
  • Kudsia Batool, director of equality, international and governance, TUC
  • Ali Haydor, GMB activist; branch secretary (southern region); chair, GMB National committee (Uber); national rep (taxi and private hire); branch race officer
  • Michelle Codrington-Rogers, anti-racism policy lead, TUC

The session will be recorded and stored in the On Demand area of the SoR website, which can be found here.

Black History Month and the SoR

To see how the SoR is supporting Black History Month, members can access the trade union’s Black History Month hub, a space where it shares webinars, interviews and podcast episodes. Currently, it is highlighting Synergy profiles of Dr Theo Akudjedu and Nechia Omiyi, and is requesting Black members to share their stories for a profile series.

The hub is also spotlighting several recent episodes of Rad Chat that explore the Black experience of cancer care and working in radiography. Rad Chat’s playlist can be found in full here.
