A bra designed to improve radiotherapy for breast cancer patients, as well as improving their dignity, has won an award.
Professor Heidi Probst and the SuPPORT 4 All study has been recognised as one of the Nation’s Lifesavers - the top 100 best initiatives from UK universities “which are saving lives and making a life-changing difference to health and wellbeing.”
Heidi, who worked for 14 years as a therapeutic radiographer and is now professor of radiotherapy and oncology at Sheffield Hallam University, presented the research at UKIO 2019 she and her project partners have undertaken to develop the specially designed bra.
The bra keeps the breasts in the same position for each session of radiotherapy, improving accuracy, as well as providing some modesty for women who normally would be naked to the waist during treatment. It is also designed to minimise the radiation dose to organs such as the heart and lungs.
