Consultation on the implementation of the EU Physical Agents Directive (EUPAD)

Published: 06 November 2015 Ezine

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is asking for feedback on their approach to implementing the EU Physical Agents Directive (EUPAD) 2013/35/EU which is to be transposed into law on the 1 July 2016.

This Directive repeals the originally adopted Directive of 2004, which resulted in many activities within MRI being severely restricted. This was due to worker exposures being above the theoretically set exposure limit values (ELVs), to the extent that everyday activities such as leaning into the bore of a magnet to check the patient would be prohibited.

The Directive covers the minimum health and safety requirements regarding the exposure of workers to the risks arising from electromagnetic fields, HSE intends to only introduce new requirements from the directive which goes beyond current UK legislation via the Control of Electromagnetic Fields at Work Regulations 2016

These regulations will be supported by guidance that outlines the measures that should be taken to assess exposure to electromagnetic fields and manage any of the risks identified. The consultative document also seeks views on the draft guidance, regulations and impact assessment.

If you would like to respond to the consultation, you can send in your responses as part of the SCoR organisational response by emailing Alex Lipton.

Alternatively, you can respond directly to the consultation by emailing [email protected] before 3 December.
