Hot Topics in Ultrasound: The role of liver elastography in the assessment of liver disease

The gold standard for diagnosing and monitoring the progression of liver fibrosis is a liver biopsy. Yet there are known limitations of liver biopsy that make it less than ideal for ongoing assessment of disease.  Siemens Virtual Touch Quantification (VTQ) has proven to be rapid, reliable and reproducible in the measurement of shear wave velocity in the liver and pancreas, thus it is potentially one of the most accessible non-invasive methods to assess chronic liver disease.
