The Home Office has received confirmation that the recommendations regarding independent prescribing for therapeutic radiographers from a limited list of six controlled drugs has been agreed. However, parliamentary approval is required before implementation can happen.
The drugs are: Tramadol, Lorazepam, Diazepam, Morphine, Oxycodone and Codeine.
Parliamentary time must be identified for the relevant legislation to be amended and subsequent implementation into clinical practice. The timescale for this is uncertain.
The HCPC now has advice about the permissions related to the prescribing of controlled drugs by AHP prescribers on their website, which will be updated when the legislation is amended.
