Inspiring pride in our profession!

Student radiographers from the University of Hertfordshire are organising a student festival study day on 16 January 2016.

Jess Gould, Debbie Williams and Vicky Rogers, third year students at the university studying for a degree in diagnostic radiography, are the driving force behind the event, with a helping hand from members of staff.

Jess explains: "We are lucky to have the backing of our course leader Aarthi Ramlaul and senior lecturer Desiree O’Leary, along with some other lecturers from the University of Hertfordshire.

"We also have the help of 5 students on the Diagnostic Radiography programme who will be assisting us on the day to make sure everything runs smoothly!

"Professor Richard Price, Dean of the School of Health and Social work at UH has also been significant in the planning and implementation of our study day."

The idea for holding a study day in a festival format came when the trio visitied another university.

"Me, Vicky and Debbie went to a radiography study day in 2014 organised by University Campus Suffolk which inspired us," said Jess.

"The organisers we spoke to were incredibly friendly and helpful in giving us information and advice into organising our own study day."

The theme for the event 'Inspiring pride in our profession' is central to the aims of the day.

"We believe radiographers should be proud of the work that we do, and always aspire to improving our practice, through learning, research, and using service user feedback," said Jess.

The festival will be beneficial for anyone studying diagnostic radiography, and will include a wide range of interesting talks covering topics like;

  • veterinary radiography
  • service user perspectives
  • functional MRI

Attendance only costs £10, with lunch, tea and coffee provided.

"This day provides a great opportunity to learn more about radiography – information that may not necessarily be in lecture material," said Jess.

"It will hopefully inspire some students in various ways. It provides a great opportunity to do some reflective CPD which could then be used in job interviews for students once you qualify."
