Society student members attended a workshop before this year’s Annual Delegates Conference, which provided background information and training on a wide range of topics.
Run by SoR student membership officer Nichola Smith and final year student Sophie Hughan, who has been a student observer to UK Council for the past year, the session covered: Trade Unions – what do we know?; The SoR structure – where does ADC fit in?; My experience as student observer to UK Council; The new pay deal – what do you think?; What is Equalise – want to get more involved?; Motions to conference; and Speaking practice.
Guest speakers included the Society’s industrial relations manager, Paul Moloney, and regional officer Paul Bromley, as well as Jamie-Michael Sylvester and Ben Stuttard of Equalise.
The Society’s president, Gareth Thomas, and vice-president Gill Hodges, encouraged the students to take part in the debates at the conference.
At the end of the workshop the students were enthusiastic and said that they had learnt a lot during the day.
“I was very impressed with the interest the students showed and the high quality of their questions and the discussions,” Nichola said.
“As well as being the profession’s future, some of them undoubtedly will be regional committee and UK Council members in future years.”
