Updated guidance on electrical equipment services

Published: 28 April 2017 Ezine

A new guidance document published by the Government titled, ‘Guidance for electrical service supply and distribution within healthcare premises’, provides information for those responsible for the design, installation, commissioning, operation and maintenance of electrical services in healthcare premises.

The guidance, which the SoR contributed towards, is primarily aimed at estates departments and those associated with electrical installations in healthcare premises providing links to updated legislation and regulations plus a new governance framework.

However, in recognition of the role of clinical staff involved in agreeing designs for new healthcare facilities, a section on both clinical and business continuity risk assessment has been included and would provide a very useful resource for managers.

The majority of the guidance provides technical detail for electrical experts.

Risk managers and those involved in equipment procurement or the commissioning of new facilities would be advised to save this link as a useful reference point and checklist to use during equipment installations or buildings upgrades.

It is of note that clinical staff should be involved in the new Electrical Safety Group and members may wish to ensure that their interests are recognised within this environment.
