The MHRA National Commission on the Regulation of AI in Healthcare has published recommendations for a future framework for AI.
Published on 10 September, the SoR has welcomed the publication’s findings and is glad to see its contributions represented.
The Commission's aim is to support timely, inclusive and safe access to AI and support healthcare providers and professionals in its adoption. The report's recommendations were grouped under three key topics: ensuring regulation covers AI devices from inception to implementation, ensuring responsibility is allocated appropriately across all stakeholders, and ensuring AI development is trusted and transparent.
'Heard and reflected'
Jeanette Carter, the SoR’s professional officer for clinical imaging, AI, assistive and digital technologies, said that the report’s conclusions reflected the SoR’s contributions on the importance of patient-centred care and post-market surveillance.
“Support for the monitoring of AI-enabled medical devices once they are in use will ensure radiographers and other healthcare staff can continuously evaluate these tools according to the evidence,” she said.
“The views presented on behalf of the radiography profession by SoR were heard and are reflected in the report. The SoR aims to take on board the recommendations provided by the MHRA and continue to work with them to support radiographers with the adoption of AI. The focus on prioritising patient safety, more transparency and better and more consistent post-deployment monitoring, as well as quicker, more efficient pre-deployment steps, will help the radiography community with the adoption of AI.”
Timely, inclusive and safe
The National Commission into the Regulation of AI in Healthcare was formed in September 2025 as an independent expert advisory body to the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency.
Its recommendations were informed by a UK-wide research and engagement programme including an open call for evidence and targeted engagement with patients and healthcare bodies, and to which the SoR contributed.
They aim to support timely, inclusive and safe access to AI and support healthcare providers and professionals in its adoption.
