Six SoR workplace reps have been awarded a level three TUC Diploma in Occupational Health & Safety.

The students from the pilot 2018/19 class are:

  • Ruth Imbo, Darent Valley Hospital
  • Adele Keen, Maidstone Hospital
  • Joanne Kelly, West Cumberland Hospital
  • Katherine Lilley, Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham
  • Helen Miles, Sunderland Royal Hospital
  • Andreia Silva, Queens Medical Centre Nottingham

The year-long programme, accredited by the NOCN Group, was a no-cost to the reps scheme by the Society to help improve the workplace for members.

During the certification ceremony, Ian Cloke, health and safety officer at the Society, thanked the participants, saying, “To be able to give you a diploma is a great step forward.

“As well as your commitment, it shows the SoR's commitment to get a higher level training programme in place,” he continued.

“A big thank you to all of you for everything you’ve put in.”

The course is recognised for entry into the Institute of Occupational Health and Safety at the Tech Sp grade.

SoR president Gill Hodges concluded the ceremony saying, “You’ve studied and applied yourselves to get this diploma so that staff can work in a safe environment and you’ve got to be applauded for that.”

All participants said they would ‘absolutely’ recommend the course to other reps.

When asked what advice they would give future candidates, Joanne Kelly said, “Be prepared for the workload and be sure to agree the necessary time off with your management before you commit.

“As long as you are passionate to want to change the workplace for the better, then you should definitely apply.”

There are 12 spaces available for the next TUC Diploma. Participants will need to be available to attend on 8-9 January, 15-16 July and 4-5 November 2020 to be considered.

SoR reps can find out about the diploma here. Send an email if you would like to apply, or for more information.
