'I See the Difference' campaign to inspire new generation of therapeutic radiographers

A new campaign - 'I See the Difference' - to raise awareness of the role of therapeutic radiographers and to encourage both young and mature students to consider therapeutic radiography as a career has been launched today. 

The initiative is in response to growing concerns that recruitment of people to the profession is falling sharply and the shortage of registered therapeutic practitioners will worsen in years to come, critically affecting the delivery of radiotherapy services.

The focus of the campaign is about the connections allied health professionals make with patients and carers and the job satisfaction those contacts bring.

Audiences will be targeted through advertising and social media, as well as outreach activities at schools and careers events. The social media hashtag is #ISeeTheDifference

The Society's professional outreach officer - therapeutic radiography, Michelle Tyler, said, "We are urging members to act as ambassadors for the profession.

"Nobody can talk better about what it is to be a therapeutic radiographer, the importance of the role, and how satisfying it is."  

Three other allied health professions - orthoptics, podiatry, prosthetics and orthotics - are also benefitting from I See the Difference, which is part of the Strategic Interventions in Health Education Disciplines (SIHED) programme.

What is SIHED?
Strategic Interventions in Health Education Disciplines (SIHED) is a £3m, three-year initiative to help raise awareness of allied health disciplines, and in particular strengthen the sustainability of four smaller professions: podiatry, therapeutic radiography, prosthetics and orthotics, and orthoptics. It focuses on activities to support recruitment to and delivery of these disciplines, and to increase understanding of the student market for health, including the mature student segment. The programme is delivered by the College of Podiatry in partnership with the Society of Radiographers, the British and Irish Orthoptic Society, the British Association of Prosthetists and Orthotists, and the Universities of Salford, Sheffield and Liverpool.

Key messages
SIHED's research has indicated that the students most likely to consider these professions are seeking a career in which their ongoing contact with patients and colleagues is directly linked to making a positive difference to someone else’s life. Key messages throughout the campaign will be:

  • Graduates from these courses have high employment rates
  • These are professions that offer a lot of variety, both in day to day activities and through dynamic career pathways
  • Patient contact time is high and these professions make a real difference to people’s lives
