Ionising radiation

The New UK Ionising Radiations Regulations 2018 came into force on 1 January 2018.

If your department/education facility has radiology, radiotherapy or nuclear medicine equipment, please note that you (an authorised employee on behalf of your employer) only have till 5 February 2018 to register with the Health and Safety Executive, for the work that is done with ionising radiation in your department.

This is known as the ‘graded approach’ and the application depends on the size and likelihood of exposure.

Depending on the level of risk of the ionising radiation work that is done, the application involves:

  • notification
  • registration
  • and consent.

The work that is done with ionising radiation applies to all employers who work with:

  • radioactive material:
  • radiation generators, such as X-ray devices.

The application can be submitted by an authorised employee (which could be either the radiation protection advisor or padiation protection supervisor) via the online form

This applies to all facilities that deliver radiology (all modalities using ionising radiations), radiotherapy or nuclear medicine services.
