The SoR has welcomed the publication of updated safety guidelines for the use and management of magnetic resonance imaging equipment.
Entitled “Safety Guidelines for Magnetic Resonance Imaging Equipment”, the document was released by the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency on 30 July, with input from a number of professional bodies including the SoR.
This 5th edition represents best practice for the safe use and management of MRI equipment in clinical settings in the UK, the document says.
A comprehensive framework
Alexandra Lipton, professional officer for MRI at the SoR, said: “This update has been a fantastic example of multi-professional body collaboration. This is a must for MRI services in providing a comprehensive governance framework with a wealth of information and resources.”
Those unfamiliar with MRI safety generally can use the publication as introduction to the technology, the guidance explains.
Radiographers can also make use of the document to better understand what should be considered before an MRI scanner is bought, and after it is installed. The guidance can serve as a reminder of the legislation and published guidance around MR equipment, as well as highlighting current risks and hazards.
Safety and management
There are five key sections within the publication:
- MRI hazards
- Exposure management
- Management of MRI units
- Management of patients and volunteers
- Equipment lifecycle
Each of these sections are further divided into specific aspects of MRI safety and management.
Input was gathered from several multiprofessional organisations, including the Society of Radiographers, the British Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine, the Royal College of Radiologists, the British Institute of Radiology, the British Association of Magnetic Resonance Radiographers, and the Royal College of Anaesthetists, and other international experts in MR safety.
An e-learning programme based on the guidance is available now, at the Health Education England e-Learning for healthcare site.
