Safety recommendations following death of MRI patient

HSIB report

Published: 30 April 2020 MRI

The death of a patient who had an MRI under general anaesthetic has been investigated by the Healthcare Safety Investigation Branch (HSIB).

The Society, with other professional bodies, were asked to comment during the investigation to provide information and context about MRI examinations of anaesthetised patients.

The HSIB has made eight safety recommendations following the investigation.

"The recommendations relate mainly to anaesthetic issues, however we would encourage all MRI departments to take account of the report and its recommendations as it raises some interesting considerations for MRI and radiology departments," Alex Lipton, the SCoR professional officer for MRI, said.
