It is with deep sorrow that we announce that Karl Nottage, a devoted radiographer, died unexpectedly at the age of 53.

Karl worked at the North Devon District Hospital and leaves behind a legacy of dedication, mentorship and compassion.  Beginning as a radiography helper and porter in 1992, Karl discovered his calling within the NHS and rose to become superintendent of the dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) service, shaping the department with his expertise and care.

Throughout his 33-year career, Karl was renowned for training and supporting students and colleagues. As a lead practice educator (SoR-accredited), his influence helped countless apprentices and trainees to develop into skilled professionals.

Alongside clinical practice, Karl shared his knowledge as a tutor at the University of Exeter, guiding learners at every stage.

For Karl, education was not just about technical training—it was about nurturing confidence, compassion, and resilience in the next generation of healthcare professionals.

His conviction in the value of clinical education embodied a core NHS principle: that fostering learning directly enhances patient safety and promotes more compassionate care. By embodying this principle, Karl ensured his impact extended far beyond his own work, living on in the skills and values of those he taught and mentored.

Karl’s journey reflected a deep commitment to growth. He compled his radiography degree in 2010 and steadily advanced through senior roles. He took pride in seeing the department evolve, cherishing the friendships and support he found along the way. Diagnosed with dyslexia and autism later in life, Karl became a passionate advocate for neurodiversity, encouraging others to embrace their unique strengths.  His compassion, guidance, and unwavering dedication will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege to learn from and work alongside him.

Karl was a loving husband to Dawn and a proud father to Abbie and step-father to Nick.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to Survivors of Bereavement by Suicide (UKSOBS) in Karl’s memory.
