A radiographer with almost 40 years of experience in the field has been awarded for his dedication.
Paul Newman, a radiographer working at Peterborough City Hospital and at Stamford & Rutland Hospital, was on Monday (24 February) visited by Richard Evans, CEO of the SoR, Katie Thompson, president of the SoR, and Rachel Nolan, president elect, for the presentation of his award.
Last year, Paul won the Eastern Radiography Professional of the Year award at the Radiography Awards, but was unable to attend to accept it.
Paul has had various roles, including in management and as an elected and accredited SoR representative, alongside working as a frontline radiographer. He emphasised that he had worked with great teams over the course of his career, all doing their best for the patient and for radiography as a whole.
His nomination described him as giving “fantastic” support to his colleagues and always being present to offer advice and support. He is frequently singled out by patients for his exceptional care. He has a caring and patient manner and always has time for those who need him.
The ceremony also caught the national eye, with news of this recognition being picked up by the BBC, where they pointed out his many years of experience and dedication to patient care.
Those who nominated him said: “Even through his times of great personal tragedy, he has remained committed to his NHS career and still gave 100 per cent of himself to his job. There isn't a day that he does not give everything to his patients, never caving under pressures to work faster or to give less care. He will take extra time to help someone who needs it.
“He will always help a colleague who needs it and spent many years supporting them as a SoR rep. The impact of Paul’s kindness, dedication and professionalism is evidenced in improved radiographic practice, better standards of management and staff relations and above all, greater focus on patient care and outcomes. This adds up to innumerable lives changed for the better.”
In the wider radiography family, Paul contributed regularly to the Society of Radiographers Annual Delegates’ Conference and to the Eastern Regional Committee for the Society. Through his many years in the job, in management as well as a radiographer he has implemented and suggested changes that have improved the service.
