The Society of Radiographers will launch its next professionalism scenario on Wednesday, 14 October, focusing on confidentiality and appropriate access to electronic patient records.

As part of its year-long professionalism campaign, the SoR has created email scenarios for members to test their responses and help them reflect on interactions with others.

The upcoming scenario forms part of the SoR's year-long professionalism campaign and addresses confidentiality and appropriate access to patient records, an area that has received increased attention across the NHS in recent months.

Robust policies and fully-trained staff

NHS England has made it clear that accessing patient records without proper clinical justification constitutes gross misconduct. Such breaches can lead to instant dismissal, regulatory action by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and potential criminal investigations.

Leandre Archer, head of industrial relations at the SoR, said: “Over the past months, we have seen a rising number of cases in this area, with some members being dismissed as a result and referred to the HCPC. Looking at a patient's record without a valid clinical or professional justification is itself a breach of confidentiality, regardless of whether the information is subsequently shared with anyone else.

"Employers also need to ensure they have robust policies in place and that staff are fully trained in their responsibilities regarding access to patient information."

Members will receive instructions on how to access the new scenario via email on 14 October.
