HSE announce new radiation consent process

New rules apply to practices under regulation 7 of the Ionising Radiations Regulations

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) are changing the way employers apply for consent to carry out specified practices under regulation 7 of the Ionising Radiations Regulations (IRR 2017).

The new application process for consent will be introduced in April 2023. Employers requiring consent from HSE will need to submit a safety assessment and will be inspected before consent is granted. Existing consents remain valid until they are due for renewal but then the new application process will be applied.

Charges for consent and certification are expected to rise considerably.

The Society for Radiological Protection (SRP) are running a workshop on the new system and SoR encourages Nuclear Medicine Service Managers to attend.
