The Society of Radiographers is pleased to announce the publication of IR(ME)R: Implications for Clinical Practice in Diagnostic Imaging, Interventional Radiology and Diagnostic Nuclear Medicine, Second Edition.
Widely regarded as the gold standard guidance for implementing IR(ME)R across diagnostic imaging, interventional radiology and nuclear medicine services, this updated edition reflects the requirements of The Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) (Amendment) Regulations 2024. It offers practical advice, real-world scenarios and solutions to some of the most commonly reported compliance and assurance challenges.
The guidance addresses new requirements relating to cooperation between employers and the use of software within medical equipment. It also provides updated advice on duty holder responsibilities, training requirements, clinical audit procedures, and processes for making, amending and cancelling referrals.
A key resource for clinical practice
Lynda Johnson, the SoR's professional officer for clinical imaging and radiation protection strongly recommends the publication as an essential reference for all professionals involved in the use of ionising radiation in patient care.

Supporting good practice across the UK
Although The Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) (Amendment) Regulations 2024 have not yet been implemented in Northern Ireland, the updated guidance nevertheless offers valuable recommendations for strengthening governance arrangements and enhancing good practice. Close collaboration with local Medical Physics Experts (MPEs) will help ensure continued compliance with existing legislation while supporting preparation for future regulatory changes.
