The European Federation of Radiological Societies’ Radiotherapy Committee is seeking contributions from Therapeutic Radiographers on a research project investigating image-guided radiotherapy.
“Radiotherapy radiographers’/radiation therapists (RTTs) role and training needs in Image-Guided Radiotherapy (IGRT)” is part of a commitment by the European federation to advancing evidence-based radiography practice.
Led by Dr Guilherme Couto and Professor Ricardo Khine, the project will explore confidence levels, training needs, and decision-making practices among Therapeutic Radiographers working in IGRT.
A spokesperson for the European Federation of Radiological Societies (EFRS) said: “As radiotherapy continues to evolve, the demand for precision in treatment delivery has never been greater. IGRT plays a vital role in ensuring that radiation is delivered accurately, safely, and effectively.”
Therapeutic Radiographers are increasingly at the forefront of IGRT, performing tasks that require both technical expertise and clinical judgment.
This includes acquiring images and making real-time decisions that directly influence treatment accuracy and patient safety.
Despite its clinical importance, there remains wide variation in how these responsibilities are defined, supported and recognised across different countries, departments, and institutions.
In support of members’ evolving roles, the SoR is calling for those working in radiotherapy to help the EFRS in identifying professional challenges and advocating for the education, resources and recognition needed to deliver high-quality care.
For this survey, IGRT refers specifically to its use in treatment verification — the process of confirming patient positioning and anatomy immediately before or during treatment to ensure safe and accurate delivery.
By completing the survey, contributors will help to further professional development initiatives and support the education, recognition and practice standards of the profession.
All responses will remain confidential and will be used exclusively for research purposes.
For any queries related to the survey or the research, contact Professor Khine at [email protected].
