Public statement: belonging, respect and support for all

The SoR has released a statement on recent national debates

At the Society and College of Radiographers (SoR | CoR), we are proud to represent a diverse and global profession. Our members bring a wide range of backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives that enrich radiography and strengthen patient care.

Recent public debates around immigration, and the heightened visibility of national symbols such as the Union Jack and St George’s flag, have created tension in many workplaces and communities. While flags can be a source of pride and identity, we recognise that in the current climate, they may also be experienced as exclusionary, intimidating or unsettling when used in divisive ways.

Our Commitment to Belonging

Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging (EDIB) are central to who we are and what we do. Belonging means that everyone should feel safe, valued, and supported – without fear of prejudice or hostility. Our EDIB action plan sets out how we are embedding these commitments across our membership, workforce, profession, and for the patients we serve.

Unacceptable Behaviours

We are clear: discrimination, harassment, racism, bullying or intimidation – whether expressed verbally, through symbols, or in behaviour – are unacceptable and have no place in our profession. These behaviours undermine patient care, damage teams, and go against our shared values of integrity, equity, advocacy, courtesy, and openness.

Support for Members

If you are an SoR member and experience or witness unacceptable behaviour:

  • Please raise this through your employer’s reporting procedures, where it is safe to do so.

  • You can seek confidential advice and support from your local SoR representative or regional officer.

  • Where appropriate, you may also use professional reporting channels, such as your local Freedom to Speak Up Guardian, to ensure concerns are addressed.

  • If you believe you have been the victim of a hate crime, you can report this online via True Vision.

Our Shared Responsibility

Every member has a role in shaping a culture of belonging. We ask you to look out for one another, to challenge exclusionary behaviours, and to support colleagues who may feel marginalised. By living our values in practice, we can ensure radiography remains a profession where everyone is respected and empowered to thrive.

Together, we stand for a community that is safe, inclusive, and proud of the diversity that makes us stronger.
